About

SURFACE 1°22 is a surface art and pattern design studio by designer and design educator – Emily Wills.

Moved by an appreciation of beauty and aesthetics, Emily designs and curates pattern collections, products and spaces which are unique, meaningful and sustainable. Her unique creative vision embraces maximalist colour and ornamentation to create original artwork and limited edition print collections for fashion forward people and creative homes.

With a background in Fashion and Printed Textile design, Emily has been invited to exhibit and teach in Asia, Europe and Australia, encouraging new ways of designing and making fashion through the lens of object and surface design. Using the body as a site and space for reflection, Emily explores multi-disciplinary approaches that help to move fashion away from its existing ties with garment production and outdated business models.

Emily grew up near Fremantle (Waylyup), on the West Coast of Australia and currently resides in Perth (Boorloo), on the unceded lands of the Whadjuk Noongyar people. Inspired by architecture, mathematics, and storytelling, Emily lives for collaborations with loud and passionate designers to create statement objects and spaces. Always the tomboy, she craves the sunshine, vast open spaces and salty air. You’ll find her outdoors with her son and lover wearing sportswear mixed with local Australian designs and sneakers.
